The Killer Inside Me 2010 movieThe Killer Inside Me is the adaptation of the 1952 novel under the same name written by Jim Thompson. The director of the film is Michael Winterbottom. Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson, and Jessica Alba star in the movie. The Killer Inside Me movie has an intricate plot, which starts with our meeting of Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford (Casey Affleck), who is a some kind of a pillar of the community in his small west Texas town, attentive, helpful and patient. The worst thing that may be said about him is that he may seem a little slow and maybe boring, but that is about it. But nobody has even a slightest idea that Lou has some kind of “sickness”: he is a striking and agitated sociopathic sadist. If his adopted brother had not taken the fall for his crimes, he would have been put away a long time ago. But nothing in the world can completely disappear, and neither can his sickness. And now, after all these years of lying dormant it i shows up again, leaving behind nothing but fear, horror and despair. About the production of The Killer Inside Me The Killer Inside Me 2010 is not the first attempt to adapt Thompson’s novel into a film. Numerous filmmakers had a great desire to do it since the mid-1950s: 20th Century-Fox optioned this project as a possible movie for Marilyn Monroe in 1956, were Monroe was to star as Joyce Lakeland. Marlon Brando was considered for the role of Lou Ford and Elizabeth Taylor for the role of Amy Stanton. But the misfortune overtook the project and after Monroe’s death on August 5, 1962, it was shelved. But a film adaption was nevertheless made, with Susan Tyrell as Joyce Lakeland and with Stacy Keach as Lou Ford (1976). Another attempt was made to adapt the book into a film. It happened in the mid-1980s, with Tom Cruise as Lou Ford, Brooke Shields as Amy Stanton, and Demi Moore as Joyce Lakeland. But just like its predecessors it was shelved. After a while, in the mid-1990s Quentin Tarantino became the director of the project. This time Uma Thurman was set to star as Amy Stanton. Juliette Lewis was attached to star as Joyce Lakeland and Brad Pitt as Lou Ford. As the movie script was rather violent, this attempt miscarried because of the September 11 attacks. Tarantino had to start doing the work all over again. Andrew Dominik wrote a screenplay, and was to direct it in 2003. He wanted Leonardo DiCaprio to star as Lou Ford, Charlize Theron as Amy Stanton and Drew Barrymore as Joyce Lakeland. But soon it happened so that Dominik lost interest in shooting a Killer Inside Me and instead chose to film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Then Marc Rocco decided to intervene, and casted Casey Affleck as Lou Ford, Reese Witherspoon as Amy Stanton and Maggie Gyllenhaal as Joyce Lakeland. Finally the film The Killer Inside Me was released at Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2010. Then, in January 2010, IFC Films announced the theatrical and VOD platforms release on June 9, 2010. The Killer Inside Me with Jessica Alba was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. The film had a limited theatrical release on June 18, 2010. The official DVD and Blu-Ray release is set for September 28, 2010. The reviews on the movie were mixed. It was given an average score of 5.6/10 and 55% of critics gave the Killer Inside Me a positive review (the information is based on the report of Review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes). The critics have reached a consensus of opinion: The Killer Inside Me is a very stylish movie, which is beautifully shot, but Michael Winterbottom’s film lacks crucial emotional context. Here is Rachel Cooke of The Observer, talking about the scene from the film in which Joyce (the prostitute played by Alba) is beaten by Lou (played by Affleck):”I was so queasy, I had to go and stand outside. I thought I might actually faint”; she also notes that “by lingering only over the violence done to women – by contrast, a male character gets to die off camera – he has, I think, ruined his own picture, drawing the audience’s attention away both from its exquisite noir mood, and from Affleck’s mesmerizing performance. The violence is a bloody blot on an otherwise beautiful canvas.” Although Ford’s victims include both men and women, it is his fierce assaults on women that has made The Killer Inside Me disputable. It is also the fact that Winterbottom shows these attacks in every detail, which is considered by many people unnecessary, as in fairness, the violence is stingily used. This is Dalton`s opinion on The Killer Inside Me: “thoughtful thriller which will bore some viewers with its low-key pacing, while repelling others with its flashes of sickening brutality. But for the less squeamish among us, The Killer Inside Me is an intelligent and gripping take on classic film noir ingredients”. Dalton gave the film four stars out of five.
